UDST Athletes Win Seven Medals at World InterUniversities Championships in Barcelona
In international collegiate athletics, where universities increasingly compete to demonstrate excellence beyond the classroom, the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) made a strong showing at the 10th World InterUniversities Championships (IUSF) in Barcelona, Spain.
Competing against over 5,000 athletes from top universities worldwide, UDST fielded teams in male football, male badminton, male swimming, male track, and female volleyball. The university concluded the championships with seven medals: two gold, three silver, and two bronze.
Swimming Dominance and Individual Excellence
The swimming team delivered the most decisive results, finishing first in the men’s competition and third overall among participating universities. The relay team of Abdullah Elghamry, Abdallah Alkhaldi, Ahmed Diab, and Youssef Gamea won gold in the 4×50 Medley Relay.
Individual swimmers contributed additional medals across multiple events. Abdallah Alkhaldi earned silver in the 50-meter butterfly, while Ahmed Diab captured silver in the 50-meter breaststroke and bronze in the 200-meter medley. Abdullah Elghamry took silver in the 50-meter backstroke, and Youssef Gamea earned bronze in the 50-meter freestyle.
In badminton, Muhammad Gayuh Wijaya secured gold in Men’s Singles, helping the badminton team achieve third place in overall team standings. Track athlete Jamal Hairane finished fifth in the 800-meter run.
Athletics as Educational Mission
The performance marks a visible international achievement for UDST’s athletics program, which operates within the university’s broader commitment to developing students across academic and non-academic dimensions.
“We are immensely proud of our student athletes who represented UDST and Qatar at this prestigious international event,” said Dr. Salem Al-Naemi, President of UDST. “Their dedication, discipline, and achievements exemplify the values and standards that UDST upholds. Beyond the medals, their performance reflects the university’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals who excel not only academically but also in non-academic pursuits locally and on the international stage.”
The results from Barcelona reinforce UDST’s positioning as an institution where athletic achievement complements academic pursuits. The university’s Sport and Wellness programs provide infrastructure and support for student athletes, reflecting an institutional philosophy that views physical development as integral to student life rather than supplementary to it.
